Granny denied freedom of speech
Recently we re-broadcast our Delores radio advert on 702. The feedback we had from the advert was fantastic, and we even got recognition from RAB South Africa. The advert broadcast for two weeks during the morning and afternoon drive shows. But someone out there was unhappy about it.
A formal complaint was registered to the ASA, complaining that the advert was indecent:
"The elderly lady had to swear during the advertisement and they beeped it out however it was highly offensive as it was every second word which and clearly she was saying F**K. It's inappropriate. I had kids in the car on the way to school and I knew what she was saying and I was offended."
Despite our explanations and justifications, the ASA decided to uphold the complaint. This means that we are not legally allowed to broadcast this advert between 5am and 9pm because it has been classified as offensive.
Do you agree?
